Eating Plant-Based in Costa Rica

I spent a week in Costa Rica and visited Puntarenas, La Fortuna, and San Jose. All the plant-based food, hiking, and beaches were incredible.

We started the week off along the coast at Puntarenas. The desayuno americano at Casa SanSe included pancakes, eggs, toast, and fruit. Everything tasted so fresh, especially the papaya. I couldn’t ask for a better beachside breakfast.

After spending a few days by the ocean, we drove in to La Fortuna to do some hiking and see Arenal volcano.

We stayed at Princesa de la Luna Ecolodge, and it was a dream living in the Costa Rican jungle. All the food was so delicious—from the fresh fruit for breakfast to the potatoes, rice, and beans for dinner. This place was absolute paradise and the hosts were so fun to talk to.

After doing some chill hiking in the jungle, we went to El Novillo Del Arenal to grab a late lunch. Eating spaghetti next to a volcano made me feel like I was in a dream. I devoured this whole plate along with the tasty garlic bread and squash cream after a hot day of searching for sloths. Drinking the refreshing house red wine while watching the fog rest upon Arenal volcano is something I’ll never forget.

I spent a day in San Jose and tried the deli skillet vegetariano at Cafe Delicias. The veggies were crispy and the egg tasted fresh. Fried eggs on top of veggies and potatoes will always be one of the best ways to start the day.

I wish I got more than one bar of this banana chocolate from Costa Rica. The way the flavor of banana melted in my mouth with a burst of flavor. I can’t wait to go back and eat more.
